Prior to having kids and starting Owl & Monkey I was an Office Administrator all rounder in sole charge roles. I worked in small businesses mostly that had me looking after all things from rosters, payroll, accounts payable and marketing/websites! This has definitely helped with the admin side of my business, along with the Diploma in Hotel Management which I did many moons ago that focused a lot on Customer Service! I was great at what I did but I didn’t want to go back as it wasn’t a role I was passionate about!
Owl & Monkey started when I was at home with 2 kiddies, Indi had just turned 6 months old and I needed a little something to do with my spare time (I know right, spare time…. what was I thinking?) and something to help get my brain working! I started out making Prints which were created by me with only simple shapes and Birth Announcement Prints. Since then my brand has expanded, evolved and become the incredible thing that it is today – thanks to all of my amazing customer and friends/family!
I now specialise in making Tutus and Birthday Sets for your little girls and boys of all ages as well as some home decor for kids and adults, decals for the whole family and amazing candles with my best friend Helen at Into the Moon! Many of my items have been inspired by my kids and I continue to do what I do for them as well as the gorgeous wee customers I have every single day! I love seeing my items being worn or used by them and it pushes me to continue!
Since becoming a small business my support of handmade, small business and shopping local has been huge. This is where Hanging with the Hays comes in. It means I get to show you all the things we love! Items from amazing NZ Businesses that we have either purchased or been gifted! They say ‘When you buy from a small business, an actual person does a little happy dance!’ and for me and many others I know, it is sooooo true! Buying from me and others like me helps to put food on our tables, helps to get those wee extras our kids deserve and ultimately pass that money back on to NZ Small Businesses as I know that is where a chunk of it goes for us!
Love, Lisa x
